Take a Chance on Tyronn Lue E-mail

tyronn lue and dirk

Tyronn Lue of the Milwaukee Bucks recently got traded to the Orlando Magic for Keith Bogans. If he's available in a league that you're in that has 14 or more managers, I would suggest that you take a gamble on his upside.

Overall this trade was a match made in heaven as far as both teams are concerned. The Bucks need an SG to fill in for Michael Redd and the Magic need a PG to fill in for Jameer Nelson. If only fantasy trades could be as simplistic and clear cut. Oh well.

I predict that he will start for the Magic, mainly because he has fresher and younger legs than Anthony Johnson. The Magic didn't trade for him just for him to come off the bench. The move was immediate and as a reaction to Jameer Nelson's expected extended absence. They clearly wanted a young and capable guard who knows at least how to bring down the ball on offense and can stick with the quicker opposing guards on the defensive end. The Magic are reasonable Eastern title contenders and want to soften the impact of Jameer Nelson's loss.

I picked him up in the GMTR Monster League, in favor of Anthony Carter - which in hindsight should have been my Luke Ridnour. My PGs are now TJ Ford, Tyronn Lue, Mario Chalmers. I know that isn't really much to speak of, but in a 20-man slugfest having Hedo Turkoglu and Paul Pierce chip in some dimes from my SG and SF slots is just what the doctor ordered.

Tyronn will have some fantasy upside to him because of the trade, make no mistake about it. The question of how much upside will remain to be seen into his first week with his new team. He won't be passing like Jameer, but Lue is a very capable offensive threat who can drive to the hoop to create his own shot. He will get some freebie assists when he passes the ball to Dwight Howard and D-Ho slams it home. He is a good defensive player, even though it doesn't necessarily translate into fantasy-enjoyable steals. Give him a week or two. His potential fantasy value change based on the added playing time minutes he is expected to get is well worth the time on your fantasy team's bench for the short term.

If you got him or plan to grab him, then let's all hope to see conservative estimated averages of 12-14 PPG / 2.5 RPG / 3-4 APG / 0.5-0.8 SPG, with so-so FG at about 44-ish percent and acceptable FT at 79%, now that he's got a fresh fantasy start.
