Fantasy Basketball Roundtable: Iverson Vs. T-Mac E-mail

First of all, allow me to apologize for my long absence. My laptop was experiencing technical difficulties. It was probably because I opted to start Mike Conley Jr. at PG instead of it. After taking it to the shop and like the good old MVP it once was, we've made peace and it promised that it wants to contribute in any way it can. Tongue out

The latest order of discussion in our fantasy hoops roundtable is: "Upon their return to the hardwood, who will have the most positive impact for fantasy teams this season: Allen Iverson or Tracy McGrady?"

Here's what I had to say:

Overall, they're both old and over the hill, but still probably have a bit left in their respective tanks to chip in some decent numbers.

A big factor to consider in answering the question is addressing where they will be playing. Based on that, I will have to make certain assumptions. For now, let's assume that Tracy will start his fantasy season for his owners in the Houston Rockets - a team that appears to not want nor need his contributions. Iverson on the other hand, looks like will be signed by a team that desperately needs a PG/SG to start for them. At this point, that team looks like the Philadelphia 76ers. They Sixers appear to need a PG, on the surface, but in the end Iguodala, Green (Willie), and Holiday can all keep the ship (team backcourt) afloat while waiting on Louis Williams to return from injury. I project less conflict with A.I. in Philly, sliding into a starter's job, than T-Mac  playing alongside Trevor Ariza. I will have to give this one to Iverson temporarily. At least until, T-Mac's contract is offloaded to another team...but then again that would be another story altogether.

t-mac

T-Mac really wants to play basketball, but there are fears that he will come back too soon and re-injure his body. Allen Iverson just really wants to start and is not coming back from any serious injuries. McGrady's spirit may be willing, but his flesh is historically weak. Iverson came off a lesser injury, but it his team spirit (or lack thereof) is what should be in question. Tracy and his battle-weary body, for all its worth, will be able to give your fantasy team more AST, 3PTM, and STL. Iverson will end up giving you more PTS, FT%, and GP (games played). Basketball is a team sport and Tracy McGrady is and has always been the better "team player", that is what will be the deal breaker for Iverson and his bloated ego. Thinking more about the TEAM and less about whether or not you will frickin' start or not, is what will end up defining who can keep more minutes on the floor. So I would have to say Tracy McGrady will have the more positive fantasy impact, because there is no "I"(verson) in "TEAM".

I submitted that just before A.I. tearfully accepted Philadelphia's one-year offer. Now his owners and the owners of the other Sixers players will have to tearfully wait and see what havoc he will wreak on the stats of everyone affected.

thumbs-up-frustration

While on the surface the move of signing Allen Iverson may be like pouring catsup on an already sweet pickled curry dish, his addition may just get Philly the wins it's looking for. They (the wins) just won't taste like what everyone is expecting.

Jrue Holiday - Bye, bye! It was nice (well not really) owning you for a week. Back to the F.A, pool you go.

Willie Green - I hope you learn to grab offensive rebounds. It might be the only way you're touching the ball.

Andre Iguodala - Hopefully, we're looking at a lot less TOs. Sadly, we're also looking at a lot less assists as the ball will be in Iverson's hands for 47 minutes of the game. Sigh. The light at the end of this tunnel is that Iggy can re-align his focus and work on perimeter defense more and go for those wayward passes as he logs more STLs.

Elton Brand - He's been more productive off the bench, coming off his hamstring injury. Call it a weird projection, but I actually see him working well with Allen. His presence in the paint will be much more appreciated now.

Samuel Dalembert - He will be the least affected by this development. His role won't change. He's there to grab rebounds and block the ball. He will have a lot more opportunities to grab those missed shots.

Thaddeus Young - Thad will be Thad. Less scoring, but his efficiency will likely improve and I do expect his outside game to develop a bit more.

Louis Williams - I mean this in the kindest way: It's good your jaw is broken, because at least you couldn't bite your tongue when you found out that your starting job is GONE. - probably for good, this season and your meteoric fantasy value is going to plummet to the Earth and land on your current owners' heads.
